What was here before?
What existed before the asphalt streets and buildings?
Why is the lemon tree squeezed into the corner of the garden?
If I follow the trees, can I connect to the history of the place?

The Mouries Collective walk through Nea Ionia, toward the uncovered section of the Podoniftis River in Nea Filadelfia, was a journey of reflection and connection, moving through an industrial area rich with the silent stories of the multicultural, migrant history of the neighborhood. Along the way, we encountered various trees and plants that added depth to our experience—Mulberry (Μουριά), Eucalyptus (Ευκάλυπτος), Bitter Orange (Νεραντζιά), Kumquat (Κουμκουάτ), Olive (Ελιά), Lemon (Λεμονιά), Pomegranate (Ροδιά), and Rose Geranium (Αρμπαρόριζα), among others. These plants spoke to the history of the place and the ongoing connections between the land and the people who have lived there.

Using cyanotype techniques, we captured the traces of our shared journey, creating a collective imprint. We reflected on questions that tied our genealogies to the land, such as: Do you see any connection between that history and the present forces that shape the relocation of people? Do you know any stories of communities coming together after forced displacement? Have you ever experienced collective processes like shared kitchens, community gardening, or other ways of rebuilding connections? How do you imagine coming together with others? What forms of gathering feel meaningful to you?

We also explored the early industrial history of our countries of origin or current living, pondering how this connects to the forces shaping population relocation today. As we shared stories of collective activation after forced relocation, through community kitchens, gardening, and other methods of rebuilding, we imagined new ways of coming together. The walk, enriched by dialogue and shared experience, helped us envision meaningful forms of gathering, grounded in the healing and nourishing power of the land and community. The small imprints on paper, created using the cyanotype technique, formed a collective book of plants. Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki and Eleni Officinalis Bourou invited us to explore the history of the neighborhood through its plants—learning about their origins, their healing and nutritional properties, and the stories they carry.

The archival material, stories, and findings will be compiled into a zine.

Τι υπήρχε εδώ πριν;
Τι προϋπήρχε των ασφαλτοστρωμένων δρόμων και των κτιρίων;
Γιατί η λεμονιά είναι στριμωγμένη στη γωνία του κήπου;
Αν ακολουθήσω τα δέντρα, μπορώ να συνδεθώ με την ιστορία του τόπου;

Οι Mouries σας προσκαλούν σε ένα περιπατητικό εργαστήριο στη Νέα Ιωνία. Η διαδρομή μας θα ξεκινήσει από την περιοχή των πρώην βιομηχανικών εγκαταστάσεων και θα καταλήξει στον ποταμό Ποδονίφτη, ιχνηλατώντας τα δέντρα και ανακαλύπτοντας τη σύνδεσή τους με τις ιστορικές και κοινωνικές δυναμικές της Νέας Ιωνίας – μιας πολυπολιτισμικής, προσφυγικής περιοχής που αφηγείται τις αστικές μεταμορφώσεις της Αθήνας. Καθώς περπατάμε, θα δημιουργήσουμε αποτυπώματα φυτών σε χαρτί με την τεχνική της κυανοτυπίας, δημιουργώντας ένα συλλογικό φυτολόγιο. Θα μοιραστούμε τις ιστορίες των δέντρων και την ιστορία της περιοχής. Στο εργαστήριο αυτό, η Βασιλική Σηφοστρατουδάκη και η Ελένη officinalis Μπούρου μας προσκαλούν να εξερευνήσουμε την ιστορία της γειτονιάς μέσα από τα φυτά της—μαθαίνοντας για την προέλευσή τους, τις θεραπευτικές και διατροφικές τους ιδιότητες, καθώς και τις ιστορίες που κουβαλούν. Ο περίπατος ολοκληρώνεται με την ανταλλαγή ιστοριών και φαγητού, είτε στο Yellow Brick είτε σε έναν δημόσιο χώρο.
